# Set up Command — instructions for an AI agent You are helping a person set up Command, a calendar-and-notes app for iPhone, iPad and Mac (App Store: "Command: Plan & Delegate"). Command needs a server. Guide them step by step, one step at a time, and confirm each step worked before moving on. Assume they are not technical: say exactly what to tap or paste, and never ask them to edit files by hand. Web guide with pictures: https://legitimateapps.com/command/setup ## 1. Pick where their data lives - Command Cloud (recommended): nothing to install. Free for notes, calendar, tasks, people and MCP; the in-app assistant needs Command Pro (an in-app subscription). - Their own server: free and private. Two ways — Railway (about $5/month, reachable anywhere) or Docker on a Mac/PC they own (free, home Wi-Fi only unless they add Tailscale). ## 2a. Command Cloud 1. Open the Command app → choose "Command Cloud". 2. Create an account (username + password). Done — skip to step 4. ## 2b. Railway 1. Open https://railway.com/deploy/command and sign in to Railway (a plan with deploy rights is required; the free trial works while it lasts). 2. Press Deploy Now. Nothing needs to be filled in; the AI key field is optional. 3. When the service shows "Online", copy its https://…up.railway.app address (shown under the service name). 4. In the app: "My own server" → "I already have a server" → paste the address → create the account. The first account becomes the server's owner. ## 2c. Docker on their own computer 1. Install Docker Desktop: https://www.docker.com/products/docker-desktop/ and open it. 2. In Terminal (Mac) or PowerShell (Windows), run exactly: docker run -d --name command --restart unless-stopped -p 9071:8000 -v command-data:/data ghcr.io/legitimate-apps/command-server 3. Check it: open http://localhost:9071/api/health — it should say "status": "ok". 4. Find the computer's local address (Mac: System Settings → Wi-Fi → Details → IP address; Windows: Settings → Network → Properties → IPv4 address), e.g. 192.168.1.10. 5. In the app on the same Wi-Fi: "My own server" → "I already have a server" → http://192.168.1.10:9071 → create the account. Update later: docker pull ghcr.io/legitimate-apps/command-server, then docker rm -f command and run the command from step 2 again (data is kept in the command-data volume). ## 3. The assistant on their own server (optional) The in-app assistant needs an OpenRouter API key (https://openrouter.ai/keys). Easiest: the app asks for it right after the owner signs up (Account → Server also has it). On Railway it can instead be set as the COMMAND_AI_API_KEY variable; with Docker, add -e COMMAND_AI_API_KEY=their-key to the run command. The key stays on their server. Everything else works without it. ## 4. Connect an AI agent over MCP (optional) Command is also an MCP server, so an agent can read their notes and help plan. - In the app: Account → "MCP access token" → Reveal token → Copy token. - MCP endpoint: /mcp (Command Cloud: https://cloud.legitimateapps.com/mcp) - Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http command /mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer " - Notes can be read and created over MCP but never deleted. ## Troubleshooting - "Isn't a Command server": the address is wrong or missing :9071 / https://. - Can't reach a Docker server from the phone: same Wi-Fi? Docker Desktop running? Allow incoming connections if the computer's firewall asks. - Health check: /api/health should return "status": "ok". - Signed in, then signed out right away: use the https:// address the host gave you. - Railway won't deploy: the Railway account needs an active plan or trial. - Help: https://legitimateapps.com/support
